Atkins, Hawpe lead streaking Rockies over Giants in SF
Baseball Betting Lines
08/27/2008 -
San Francisco, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Garrett Atkins drove in two runs and
Brad Hawpe finished 2-for-2 with a double, three walks and three runs scored,
as the Colorado Rockies defeated the San Francisco Giants, 7-2, in the middle
test of a three-game series from AT&T Park.
Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta also knocked in two runs for Colorado,
which has won four games in a row and nine of its last 11 overall. At 63-71,
the Rockies, amazingly, find themselves just six games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West.
Jorge De La Rosa (7-7) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits over six
innings to get the win. Jason Grilli tossed three perfect innings in relief to
collect his first major league save.
Rich Aurilia had three hits and scored twice for the Giants, who have lost two
straight following a season-best five-game winning streak.
Matt Palmer (0-2), making the third start of his career, was tagged for five
runs -- four earned -- on four hits and six walks in 4 1/3 frames.
The Giants opened the scoring in the second on Randy Winn's RBI double, but
Colorado pulled ahead with four runs in the third. Clint Barmes led off with a
single and Willy Taveras bunted him to second. Matt Holliday then reached
first on Pablo Sandoval's fielding error and Hawpe walked to load the bases
for Atkins, who stroked a two-run single. After Ian Stewart walked to reload
the bases, Iannetta made it a 4-1 game with a two-run single.
San Francisco picked up a run in the fourth when Aurilia reached on an infield
single and later scored on Atkins' fielding error. The Rockies countered in
the fifth on Tulowitzki's sacrifice fly, then extended their lead further
in the seventh.
With Jack Taschner on the bump, Hawpe got things started with a double and
eventually came around to score on Stewart's RBI single. A single by
Tulowitzki plated Stewart and gave the visitors a 7-2 lead.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.
Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.
MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .
''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''
Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.
He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.
''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''
Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.
Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.
With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
